In Colorado, 78% of deaths involving a gun are a suicide. In an effort to stop these senseless deaths, Denver initiated their STAR program. The STAR program sends mental health professionals to the scene for mental health emergencies instead of police. While it has shown some progress, people with suicidal ideation can stop emergencies before they happen by getting proper treatment for PTSD, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation.
One of the most popular treatments today is Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is a type of psychotherapy that utilizes bilateral stimulation of the brain to reduce anxiety. Studies show the effectiveness of EMDR in telehealth formats, especially in the case of suicidal ideation.
