EMDR R-TEP is a complete current trauma-focused protocol for EEI that includes and extends the existing EMD and Recent Event protocols along with additional measures for containment and safety.

- Assessment: The therapist helps the client identify the specific target memories or distressing events that will be the focus of the EMDR treatment. The client chooses a negative belief associated with the target memory and a positive belief they would like to replace it with.
- Desensitization: This is the core phase of EMDR therapy. The client focuses on the target memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, which can involve eye movements, hand tapping, or auditory cues. The goal is to desensitize the distressing memory and reduce the associated negative emotions.
- Installation: During this phase, the therapist helps the client strengthen the positive belief that they selected in Phase 3. The client is asked to imagine the previously distressing memory while holding the positive belief, and the bilateral stimulation is used to facilitate the integration of the positive belief.
- Body Scan: The therapist guides the client to scan their body for any residual tension, discomfort, or emotions related to the target memory. The bilateral stimulation is used to facilitate the release and processing of any somatic sensations.
- Closure: At the end of each EMDR session, the therapist ensures that the client is feeling stable and grounded. They may teach the client additional coping skills to use outside of therapy to manage any distress that may arise between sessions.
- Reevaluation: In subsequent sessions, the therapist and client review the progress made and assess if any additional target memories need to be addressed. This phase allows for ongoing adjustments to the treatment plan.
